The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC),
http://nsidc.org, at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado at Boulder, serves as a national information and referral center in support of snow and ice research. Our mission is to make fundamental contributions to cryospheric science and excel in managing data and disseminating information in order to advance understanding of the Earth system. This is a part-time position, starting at 24 hours per week with the possibility of increasing over time.
The successful candidate will have strong coding skills in XHTML/CSS, scripting skills in Javascript and PHP, and will be able to implement graphical and interactive designs with minimal direction. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate Web development experience with Web APIs, libraries (jQuery, Dojo), frameworks, and other current Web technologies.
BASIC FUNCTIONS
Code Web sites, Web pages, and other user interface designs in XHTML/CSS.
Perform rapid iterative development of Web site component and Web application functionality using Javascript, PHP, and other front-end Web technologies.
Write clean, standards-compliant code that is easy to read, reuse, and maintain.
Troubleshoot and perform maintenance for Web site and Web applications, including HTML/CSS issues and script refactoring.
Assist with usability research and user experience design
Coordinate with other Web personnel as needed to accomplish tasks.
Juggle multiple tasks and priorities, and respond to unplanned requests while meeting deadlines.
REQUIREMENTS
Bachelors degree
Minimum 2-3 years experience building complex Web sites and Web applications using HTML/CSS
2+ years using Javascript and PHP/My SQL
Advanced knowledge of HTML/XHTML/CSS and Web Standards
Experience with AJAX, Web APIs, libraries, and frameworks
Knowledge of browser standards, compatibility, and best practices
Excellent initiative, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills
DESIRABLE SKILLS
Experience working on very large Web sites or applications
Experience working in a collaborative team environment
Knowledge of CMS systems and/or database-driven content
Data Visualization/Mapping & Geographic applications
Knowledge of Usability, User Experience, User Centered Design principles
Web 2.0/Social Media applications
Flash/Flex, Actionscript, Java, Ruby
Knowledge of SEO strategies and metrics
