8-Day Phases of the Moon Grandfather clock by John Winstanley of Holywell, Wales circa 1840. It has a 14-inch painted Arch Dial with rolling moon phases, date aperture wheels and a subsidiary seconds dial. (all working). The rolling moon phases are framed by two globes and floral illustrations on each spandrel. There are black painted Roman numerals with Arabic numerals at the quarter hour. The movement strikes on a single bell.
The case is Mahogany, with a fluted hood and trunk side columns. There are re-entrant corners to the raised base panel, canted sides and finial, and gilt wood column capitals. The arched glazed door is flanked by reeded square section columns, the trunk with a shell marquetry door flanked by reeded quartered columns, inlaid box base with chamfered edge raised on bracket feet.
Case size: H 94”/224cm, W 24”/59cm, D 10”/29cm.
It includes the original two weights and pendulum, lock, winding key and door key. The movement, dial and case all began life together; they are all original parts.
