Hours are as follows:
Position #1: Sunday - Wednesday 10:00pm-8:00am/ Other shifts are available
Position #2: Wednesday 2:30pm to 10:30pm and Thursday-Saturday 10:00pm - 8:00am
Position #3: Hours are 2:00pm - 10:30pm Tuesday - Saturday
Shift differential will be paid (10% for any hours worked between 3:30 pm and 11:30 pm, and 20% for any hours worked between 11:30pm and 7:30am)

If selected as a provider for this clinical service position, you will be required to provide proof of education and transcripts (and proof of licensure, if applicable) and pass all required background checks prior to hire. You will also be required to complete MHP's credentialing process and attend new hire orientation/training before you will be able to begin work.


The Substance Abuse Specialist provides direct services to post-intoxicated and newly sober persons in a transitional residential substance abuse treatment facility.

Job Summary:

To provide direct services and assistance to clients in a milieu environment.

Essential Functions:

Conducts client screening; including client histories, case notes and discharges
Assists with program orientation and reinforcing programmatic practices
Provides support in the management of the milieu and the work environment
Evaluates crisis situations and escalated behaviors and provides appropriate interventions and support
Intervenes in situations to promote health and recovery face to face contact with clients in order to facilitate progress toward recovery
Works collaboratively with clients and other pertinent staff to coordinate appropriate care
Monitors clients' vital signs and assesses the need for medical or higher level care and coordinates those sources as appropriate
Facilitate BAL and UTox screening, as needed.
Maintains up-to-date clinical records on assigned clients
Completes documentation of services consistent with clinical and administrative policies and proceduresMeets defined individual and department goals, activity metrics and Key Performance Indicators
Promotes, supports and demonstrates MHP's mission, vision and values through both behavior and job performance and adheres to policies, procedures, Compliance Plan and Standards of Conduct on a day to day basis
Effectively interacts and communicates with other MHP staff/clients/customers/partners/etc.
Regular and consistent attendance is required to perform other essential functions of the job
Other duties as assigned

Specialized Duties:

Provide support to clients in identifying community resources for tranitional support
May co-facilitate life skills and addiction-based group therapies.
Administer prescribed psychotropic medications.
Transportation of clientele, as needed


Candidates must have either a HS diploma and CAC II certification or above, OR a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Work or Counseling, OR A Bachelor's in a different field and at least one year of experience in behavioral health.
Previous work experience in the human services field preferred
Current CPR certification, or ability to obtain CPR certification within 30 days of hire
QMAP certification required; if not already certified must become certified within 30 days of hire
Must receive the flu shot annually
Registration in the State of Colorado DORA database as an approved addictions counselor or mental health licensure is required within 90 days of hire
Must be at least 21 with a current Colorado driver's license and a clean driving record


Working knowledge of addictions and their treatments
Ability to learn and understand program policies and procedures
Ability to make good judgments regarding client related issues of a confidential, legal or medical nature
Ability to monitor client vital signs
Ability to work with minimal supervision
Must be able to effectively work with other staff, partner agencies and the public
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Must be able to work effectively with intoxicated clients
Excellent de-escalation and problem-solving skills
Ability to work independently as well as in a team setting and with a larger treatment team
Must be competent in working with people of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds
Demonstrated computer proficiency including use of electronic health record and MS Office products and ability to learn new tools as needed
Advanced computer skills including use of electronic health record and MS Office products and the ability to learn new tools as needed
Bicultural/Bilingual (Spanish) preferred

Residential Facility
General office environment
Must be able to work in a shared office space with frequent interruptions
May include working with people in acute distress or crisis
May require travel to several MHP sites throughout Boulder and Broomfield counties to attend meetings
