Holes, especially located by agro scientists in the bottom and top pieces, allow heavier carbon dioxide to escape below while fresh air enters in from the top. Meanwhile, ethylene gas, which the fruit gives off naturally during ripening, is contained within the dome to accelerate the process. The concept was developed at The University of California, in cooperation with California Tree Fruit Agreement.
