This JMI NGT-18" f/4.5 Reflector is an observatory quality telescope that is an open truss Newtonian design that gathers tons of light. The NGT-18 weighs only 245 pounds with the heaviest single component being 75 pounds, so you can pack the entire system into the trunk of a car and drive to where the skies are darkest.
The JMI NGT-18" is a Split-Ring Equatorial Mount, that has a rotating nose assembly so you can position the eyepiece at the most comfortable viewing angle. The 18” mirror comfortably rests on an 18-point flotation cell, adjustable from the bottom. The main eyepiece is nominally 2”, however it can be adapted down to fit desired eyepiece diameter. A motorized micro-motion focuser is driven by the handheld controller. The split ring (NGT) design tracks superbly. Integrated Polar and declination axis encoders keep track of telescope pointing position. The f/4.5 mirror is notably fast, such that this is one of the largest Newtonian telescopes that can be used while comfortably standing on the ground. In the above pictures, there is a 6 ft wooden ruler standing next to the telescope. In the event that a fixed (observatory) mounting is desired, levelling feet are provided to replace the casters. There is an integrated 115 VAC to +12VDC power supply for reliable power to the main tracking servo. Both the primary and secondary mirrors were professionally re-aluminized in 2025.
